Six people were injured by gunfire on Saturday night in Newark, Del., in the midst of Halloween and just a short walk from the University of Delaware campus. Local police confirmed that all the injured were taken to area hospitals, although their condition has not yet been disclosed, nor has it been revealed whether anyone has been arrested.

The shooting occurred around 11:13 p.m. on Saturday on the south side of East Main Street, just across from Choate Street, according to the Newark Police Department. The area, one of the busiest in the city center during the holidays, was filled with young people in costumes when the gunshots rang out, causing a stampede among those present.

Police response and Main Street closure

Police launched a large-scale operation in the area, involving several agencies, including the Delaware State Police and emergency response units from the University of Delaware. Main Street remained closed for approximately five hours, between South Chapel and Haines Street, while investigators processed the scene and searched for evidence.

The University of Delaware issued an emergency alert shortly before 11:30 p.m. to inform students and staff of the incident and warn them to avoid the area. The university also coordinated with local police to assist students who needed help getting back to their dorms.

Ongoing investigation and call for public assistance

Newark police confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to public safety related to the incident, although the investigation remains active as detectives work to determine the circumstances of the shooting. So far, it has not been confirmed whether any suspects have been arrested, nor have any details about the victims been released.

Authorities have asked anyone with videos, photographs or information about the incident to contact Detective Paige Klein or to submit evidence via the link provided by the police. The incident is the first shooting recorded in Newark this year, according to a local database.
