"Is it a felony?" The unusual reaction of a burglar arrested in California after learning the extent of her crime
Authorities in Orange County (California) arrested three offenders who were unaware that theft has been classified as a felony for a few days.
Authorities in Orange County (California) arrested three women after they stole more than $600 worth of items from a well-known cosmetics store. The curious thing about this case was the reaction of the offenders when they learned that they were facing a more serious crime than they had imagined, since its classification changed and came into force a few days ago.
The arresting officers released a video showing the detainees handcuffed and seated in the police vehicle. Then, one of the offenders questioned whether they could prosecute them for a felony, to which another of them replied: "B****, new laws. Stealing is a felony."
The inquiring female detainee, perplexed by her accomplice's response, lamented what happened by saying: "This is Orange County. B****."
The criminalization on shoplifting in the county changed a few days ago. The new law holds that such acts constitute a felony, whatever the value of the stolen items. Previously, it was considered a misdemeanor if the theft did not exceed $950.
