A team of Spanish researchers led by forensic expert José Antonio Lorente confirmed Thursday that the remains buried in the Cathedral of Seville are indeed those of Christopher Columbus, discoverer of the American continent.

The research brings a definitive conclusion to one of history's biggest questions and sheds light on the past of the historical figure. The past and actual location of Columbus' eternal resting place have so far been the subject of numerous debates among the scientific community.

The team of researchers assures that there is absolute reliability regarding the conclusions provided by the analysis of the remains buried in the Cathedral of Seville in Spain. There, although well after his death, the presumed remains of the explorer were buried.

The researchers recalled, however, that there is not a complete human skeleton under the crypt of the Cathedral of Seville, which could indicate that the rest of the parts are in the Dominican Republic, as this country has been asserting for years.

The bones that were buried in the Spanish cathedral could not be previously analyzed due to the little genetic material they contained. The use of new technology made it possible to carry out the study only recently.

Lorente, the leader of the research team, is a professor at the University of Granada who has collaborated in FBI forensic investigations throughout his career, experience he put to use to learn more details about Columbus' past. Along with the investigation, Spain's public media corporation has released a documentary.
