TV personality Owen Shroyer sentenced to 60 days in jail
U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly noted that the conservative was influential in empowering the crowd on the steps of the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Conservative TV personality Owen Shroyer was sentenced to 60 days in jail for the events of Jan. 6. The judge's decision was given because Shroyer supposedly promoted the demonstrations.
U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly noted that Shroyer was influential in empowering the crowd that was on the steps of the Capitol that day. Although the accusation was based on Shroyer's statements, the judge maintained that he respects freedom of expression.
"Nothing you’re being prosecuted for and nothing about your conduct that day was about being a journalist," Kelly said to Shroyer in a statement obtained by the Washington Post. However, he stressed that, with his comments, Shroyer interfered in the transfer of power.
Last week, Justice Department (DOJ) prosecutors requested 120 days in prison for Shroyer. "In the months prior to January 6, Shroyer spread election disinformation paired with violent rhetoric to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of viewers," the document in which DOJ prosecutors made the request reads.
In addition, the DOJ noted that "Shroyer helped create January 6. The government respectfully requests that this Court sentence him to 120 days of incarceration, 12 months of supervised release, 60 hours of community service, and $500 in restitution."
