Real Kosher Ice Cream brand recalled in several states over listeria contamination
The FDA suggested that consumers, restaurants and retailers discard or return the ice cream cups.
Real Kosher Ice Cream's well-known ice cream cups are being recalled in several states nationwide following an alert issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that its products may be contaminated with listeria.
The FDA explained through its website that epidemiological data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that two people (one from New York and one from Pennsylvania) became ill after eating ice cream from Real Kosher Ice Cream cups. Later a sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Although the investigation is still ongoing, the ice cream company has decided to voluntarily withdraw all flavors of ice cream cups in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the nation's capital.
In the meantime, the FDA suggested that those consumers, restaurants and retailers who have purchased or received these products discard or return them. "Ice cream has a long shelf life and may still be in freezers. Consumers, restaurants, and retailers should check their freezers and throw away recalled ice cream products or return to place of purchase for a full refund," FDA said, noting that listeria can survive at sub-zero temperatures and spread easily to other foods and surfaces.
Possibly contaminated cheese
Recently the FDA also warned that Cooperstown Cheese Company cheese, distributed between June 21, 2023, through July 10, 2023, may also be contaminated with listeria, so approximately 1,400 pounds of this product were recalled.
An outbreak in Washington
Listeria has been affecting several areas of the country. A few weeks ago, the Washington State Department of Health warned that three people have already died from listeria infection in that state.
