"The horrors of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and the conflict they reignited have resulted in unbearable human loss," the Democrat wrote in the statement posted on networks Monday. "It has been hard to watch and nearly impossible to rationalize."
The former president also expressed gratitude for the cessation of hostilities, saying, "I’m grateful that a ceasefire has taken hold, that the last 20 hostages have been freed, and that desperately needed aid has begun to flow into Gaza."
Donald Trump's leadership and the first phase of the plan
Clinton attributed the success to a collective effort but highlighted Trump's leadership: "President Trump and his administration, Qatar, and other regional actors deserve great credit for keeping everyone engaged until the agreement was reached."
That agreement, signed at a summit in Egypt, includes Israeli withdrawal from parts of Gaza, the release of more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners, and temporary control of the strip by a technical committee without Hamas participation.
The former Democratic chairman also urged capitalizing on the moment:"fragile moment into lasting peace that provides the dignity and security of both Palestinians and Israelis."
