In a move that has generated controversy, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a renowned public institution, approved a $135,706.51 appropriation for the Sex Out Loud student club for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

This group, described as a "peer-to-peer sexual health resource", is dedicated to promoting "positive" sex education and activism, offering programs ranging from workshops on "ethical porn" to events with sex toy giveaways.

A budget focused on salaries and supplies

According to the approved budget, of the $136,475 requested by Sex Out Loud, more than $90,000 will go to salaries, while $41,000 will cover supplies and services, including $14,000 specifically for programming.

Among the highlights was the Sex After Dark event, held in April, which included a drag performance, a bingo game, and a sex toy giveaway, according to a post on the group's Instagram.

Sex Out Loud

Sex Out Loud's website underscores its mission to "promote healthy sexuality through sex-positive education and activism", seeking to create a safe space for students to discuss issues related to sexuality.

In addition, it offers a safe sex supplies order form, such as more than 20 types of condoms, eight lube options, flavored latex sheets, Plan B (Plan B is emergency contraception), and pregnancy tests, donated by Planned Parenthood and EC Access Network.

Programs from: "Ethical Pornography" to "Sex Jeopardy"

Among the programs offered by Sex Out Loud is a 90-minute session on "ethical porn," which explores the differences between conventional pornography and that considered ethical.

Other workshops include "LGBTQIA+," focusing on gender identity and coming-out experiences, and "Sex Jeopardy," an interactive game with questions about sexual health, pleasure, and identity. Also offered are sessions on "Advanced Pleasure," "Kink," and "Masturbation."

The club also publishes an annual zine, whose theme for 2024-2025 is "Fck Me: Pleasure, Perversions, and Politics," inviting students to explore "the complexities of desire, pleasure, and identity." It also promotes sex toy brands such as The Tool Shed and Cute Little Fckers, the latter run by queer, trans, and disabled people.

Planned Parenthood

The organization is one of the leading abortion providers in the United States.

Its 2023 annual report says it performed nearly 400,000 of the approximately 1 million abortions that occurred in the US that year, meaning it was responsible for nearly 40%.

Planned Parenthood does not advertise itself as an "abortion clinic," but instead uses the euphemism "women's health," claiming it also offers other non-abortion services.
