The Pentagon now has 10,000 troops deployed to the border with Mexico following the dispatch of another 1,115 service members. As announced by the Northern Command in a statement, the move seeks to "provide enhanced sustainment, engineering, medical, and operational capabilities as part of the Department of Defense’s continued whole-of-government approach to gain full operational control of the southern border."

According to the document released by the Northern Command, the deployed military personnel belong to various corps with different specialties to complement the needs of all the Security Forces deployed on the border, such as the Border Patrol or National Guard troops from different states. The latest deployment will include:

  • Approximately 65 Joint Individual Augmentees from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force will reinforce the Joint Task Force-Southern Border headquarters.
  • Approximately 250 soldiers from an Expeditionary Sustainment Command will coordinate logistics and manage sustainment requirements throughout the area of operations.
  • Approximately 140 Soldiers from a Quartermaster Field Food Company will provide field food support to deployed personnel operating in austere environments.
  • Approximately125 Soldiers from an Engineer Brigade Headquarters and 145 Soldiers from an Engineer Battalion will provide engineering command and control and execute vertical and horizontal construction missions.
  • Approximately 310 Soldiers from two Engineer Construction Companies will construct mobility routes, force protection infrastructure and mission-critical facilities.
  • Approximately 75 Soldiers from one Medical Area Support Company will provide health protection to deployed personnel.
  • Approximately five airmen from an Air Force Logistics Support Element from Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, will coordinate rapid logistics and sustainment planning in support of mission requirements.

Support without direct involvement in law enforcement activities

As emphasized by the DoD, "Military personnel do not directly participate in civilian law enforcement activities. The active-duty personnel will support enhanced detection and monitoring efforts and repair and install physical barriers."

Thus, “the military personnel who have provided support to border security as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s request for FY2025 have carried out duties including detection and monitoring, logistics, and transportation support that enhance CBP’s ability to deter or interdict illegal crossings, maintain situational awareness, and apply appropriate law enforcement response in support of its overall border security mission.”

Since Trump's arrival in the White House, and following the signing of executive orders to reinforce the border, illegal entry has plummeted to historic lows, with monthly entries lower than those recorded during Biden's tenure on a single day.
