James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, pushed for the criminal prosecution of Andrew Cuomo for allegedly "lying to Congress." The Kentucky Republican referred the former New York governor to the Department of Justice (DOJ), something he had already done during the Biden Administration.

In the midst of his campaign for mayor of New York, a race in which he currently leads in the polls, Cuomo could face prosecution for his actions and subsequent statements during 2020.

Indeed, the Oversight Committee chairman relied on the findings of a Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, from which they accused the Democrat of making false statements to Congress when he was called to testify about his handling of New York's nursing homes.

"Andrew Cuomo is a man with a history of corruption and deceit, now caught red-handed lying to Congress during the Select Subcommittee’s investigation into the COVID-19 nursing home tragedy in New York," Comer said in a statement released Monday.

"This wasn’t a slip-up—it was a calculated cover-up by a man seeking to shield himself from responsibility for the devastating loss of life in New York’s nursing homes. Let’s be clear: lying to Congress is a federal crime. Mr. Cuomo must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The House Oversight Committee is prepared to fully cooperate with the Justice Department’s investigation into Andrew Cuomo’s actions and ensure he’s held to account," it added.

The Oversight Committee statement cites "overwhelming evidence" against the former New York governor, remarking that he lied in an interview conducted on Capitol Hill in June 2024.

The recommendation came days after the Trump administration launched a website explaining the origins of the coronavirus. The page has a section specially reserved for Cuomo in which he mentions the order issued by the then-governor "that forced nursing homes to accept COVID-19-positive patients."

"Evidence shows that Mr. Cuomo and his administration worked to cover up the tragic aftermath of their policy decisions in an apparent effort to shield themselves from accountability," the website adds.

As for the mayoral election, Cuomo is currently leading in the polls against incumbent Eric Adams, who opted to run as an independent, and a generic Republican candidate. The elections will take place on November 4.
