Never Back Down, a Super PAC supporting DeSantis, is losing another key person. Its president, Adam Laxalt, announced that he is stepping down. He is the second person to leave the main group supporting the Florida governor in his attempt to become the Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

The letter, sent on November 26 to the board of Never Back Down, was obtained exclusively by The New York Times. In it, Laxalt announced that he was leaving office so that he could spend more time with his family, although he claimed that he will remain committed to the governor of Florida becoming president: "After nearly 26 straight months of being in a full-scale campaign, I need to return my time and attention to my family and law practice."

Laxalt, former Nevada attorney general, and DeSantis have had a close relationship for years. They lived together when DeSantis was training as a naval officer and they have been good friends since then.

In fact, the governor of Florida supported Laxalt during his bid to become governor of Nevada in 2018, as well as during his campaign for Senator in 2022. Adam Laxalt was unsuccessful both times. Following his defeat in the senatorial campaign, Laxalt joined the Never Back Down Super PAC in April 2023.

The departure of Adam Laxalt, a new problem for Never Back Down

It is the second major loss that Never Back Down has experienced in just two weeks. On Thursday, November 23, Thanksgiving Day, the Super PAC also lost its CEO, Chris Jankowski. The executive director said, in a statement issued by the group, that his departure was due to differences regarding the strategy that Never Back Down was using. However, like Laxalt, he will continue to support Ron DeSantis during his presidential race:

Never Back Down’s main goal and sole focus has been to elect Gov. Ron DeSantis as president. Given the current environment, it has become untenable for me to deliver on the shared goal and that goes well beyond a difference of strategic opinion. For the future of our country I support and pray Ron DeSantis is our 47th president.

However, Ron DeSantis' campaign continues to rely on the work of Never Back Down. David Polyansky, DeSantis' deputy campaign manager, gave a statement which was later reported by The Hill in which he said that "the collective firepower of Team DeSantis remains unmatched":

As the last three Iowa Caucus winners have shown, it takes a combination of hard work, air support, and grassroots organizing to win. Never Back Down boasts an impressive field operation and ground game. Working alongside their independent efforts, we will all celebrate hitting our 99th Iowa County tomorrow and carry the support of the most robust turnout operation in modern Iowa history into success on January 15.
