The former president also reported that he hopes to act as a unifier of the party next week in Congress.

Donald Trump is willing to become the new interim speaker of the House of Representatives while lawmakers take time to agree on who should take on the responsibility.

Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif ., was recently ousted as House speaker, and the GOP can’t seem to agree on who should be his replacement.

Several representatives nominated Trump for the position, and although it seemed unlikely that the former president would agree to take on the role amid his bid for the presidency, he has already announced that he would be willing to do so for a short time.

“They have asked me if I would consider taking the speakership until they get somebody longer-term because I am running for president ... I will do it if necessary, should they not be able to make their decision,” he told Fox News.

The former president clarified that it is not something he really wants to do but that he will do it for the GOP for a brief “30, 60 or 90-day period” while the party reaches a consensus.

Trump will visit the Capitol

The former president announced that he will go to speak with the Republican members of the House next Tuesday to “unify the party.”

Republicans who support Trump as speaker

Troy Nehls, Representative of Texas, has possibly been the member of the House who has most demonstrated his desire to nominate Trump.

The representative has explained that there is no rule or law that says that the speaker of the House must be a member of the House of Representatives and that he does not believe that there is another person more suitable for the position.

Jim Jordan, a representative of Ohio, was also enthusiastic about the possibility of Trump being the new speaker. However, he made it clear that his primary interest is for the former president to regain the White House.

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Greg Steube have said they are in favor of the idea. “The only candidate for Speaker I am currently supporting is President Donald J. Trump,” Greene said.
