Progressive lawyer Alan Dershowitz warned that the indictment against Donald Trump over classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago is "extraordinarily dangerous" and could move the presidential election into the courts.

After Trump himself publicly reported that the Justice Department issued a new indictment against him, Dershowitz expressed concern about how "weak" the case against the former president appears to be.

The lawyer and professor emeritus of Harvard Law School stressed that to make such an accusation against a former president and current presidential candidate, who is also the favorite of the Republicans, one should have a case as strong as the one against Richard Nixon," which we will remember led not to Democrats to demand his resignation, but Republicans, his own colleagues came to him and said, this case is so strong that we can't support you," Dershowitz expressed in the program "Mornings with Maria."

He then added that contrary to what happened at that time, currently no Republican seems to agree with the accusation against Trump. "If this indictment is as weak as it appears to be, from what has been disclosed so far, it may be the most dangerous indictment in political history," he said, highlighting that this is the first time the incumbent president's administration has indicted its main rival for the election.

"It's an extraordinarily dangerous indictment, potentially dangerous to the rule of law, dangerous to the neutral application of criminal justice, and dangerous to establishing a precedent that each side will weaponize the criminal justice system against their political opponents," he added.

Dershowitz took the opportunity to state that he has voted against Trump twice and claimed that he has the constitutional right to do so a third time and that neither politicians, prosecutors or judges should take it away from him.

"If this becomes a politically divided prosecution, where the Republicans are on one side, the Democrats are on the other, it moves the election out of the polling booth to the courthouse," he warned, adding that this is not how elections should happen.

Dershowitz suggests accelerating Biden's investigation

The professor explained that there should be "equal justice" and emphasized that if he were a Republican leader, he would focus on drafting an indictment against Joe Biden and his son with the information available about the bribery scheme they allegedly took part in, to determine whether there is a truly unique standard of justice.
