The fast food chain Wendy's reported that it plans to close hundreds of branches in the country over the next few months. The move comes in an effort to increase its profits.
During a conference call with investors the Dublin based company detailed that the restaurant closures will begin from the fourth quarter of 2025.
The company said it expects that a "single digit percentage" of its U.S. stores will be affected, but did not elaborate on the exact number of locations that will be closed.
According to the Associated Press, a five percent reduction of Wendy's 6,011 U.S. restaurants would result in the closure of approximately 300 locations.
The decision is in addition to the closure of 240 Wendy's locations in the United States during 2024. At the time, the company explained that many of the chain's 55 year old restaurants were obsolete.
In that regard, Ken Cook, Wendy's interim CEO, said the company believes closing underperforming locations, either from a financial or customer service perspective, will help improve traffic and profitability at its remaining restaurants.
“When we look at the system today, we have some restaurants that do not elevate the brand and are a drag from a franchisee financial performance perspective. The goal is to address and fix those restaurants,” Cook said during a conference call with investors.
