Royal Spanish Academy updates the dictionary with new words: 'Espóiler,' 'indie,' 'rapear' 'barista'

The Royal Spanish Academy reported that it adds 4074 new words, including new terms and expressions, additional meanings for words already recorded, corrections to existing entries and deletions.

The Royal Spanish Academy, in collaboration with its colleagues in the Association of Spanish Language Academies, updated the 23rd 2016 edition of the "Diccionario de la Lengua" ("Dictionary of the Language"). This is the eighth annual update. It did so by including words such as "espóiler," "indie," "rapear" and "barista."

The RAE reported that it is adding 4,074 new entries, including new terms and expressions, additional meanings for words already recorded, corrections to existing entries and deletions. It also presented a renewed interface in its electronic version, designed to make the consultation of the academic dictionary more intuitive, as it is a tool that millions of people use globally.

In the scientific field, the RAE detailed, terms such as "aerotermia" and "micelar" have been added, as well as words such as "dana" and "microbioma" that are related to the environment and biology.

In technology, words such as "desarrollador" and "escalabilidad," the latter also used in economics, are incorporated. Likewise, everyday terms such as "teletrabajar" and a new meaning of "temporada" referring to a set of episodes of a series or program have been added.

Regarding food, the dictionary now also includes terms such as "barista," "frapé," "infusionar," "tabulé," "umami," "varietal" and "wasabi."

The musical field brings novelties such as "blusero" and "rapear," as well as foreign words such as "funk," "groupie" and "indie," the latter also linked to cinema. In sports, additions such as "bicicross" and "capoeira" stand out, along with terms such as "curling," "drive," "fitness," and "full contact."

In addition, other words are included such as "atencional," "desendeudamiento," "dramaturgista," "humanizador," "musealizar," "musealización," y "sociolaboral." Colloquial uses have also been added, such as "chorreo" to refer to a reprimand.
