Congressman Henry Cuellar robbed at gunpoint less than a mile from the Capitol

Several armed men stole the representative's car and various other belongings. He was not injured. The investigation is ongoing.

A group of armed men robbed Democratic Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar at gunpoint. According to ABC 7, the events occurred late Monday night near the representative's home, in the Navy Yard neighborhood, just a mile away from the Capitol.

According to ABC 7 sources, a group of three or four men pointed a gun at the congressman. They took off with his car and some personal belongings. A few hours later, Cuellar's car was found abandoned in a nearby area.

Along with the car, the thieves also stole his phone and iPad. Representative Cuellar was not injured. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time. According to a statement collected by ABC 7, the Capitol Police and DC Metropolitan Police Department are handling the case.

Carjacking is a growing problem in Washington DC. According to official data, there have been nearly 750 so far in 2023 and 75% of them involved a firearm. In 2021 the Metropolitan Police launched a special task force to handle these crimes.
