Blinken and Mayorkas travel to Mexico to meet with López Obrador

Biden administration officials are raising the issue of illegal immigration with the neighboring president as a massive caravan of migrants makes its way to the southern border.

High-ranking officials from the Biden administration traveled to Mexico this Wednesday to meet with the López Obrador government. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas lead the U.S. delegation in Mexico, which aims to address the issue of migration and compliance with the Los Angeles Declaration.

While members of the U.S. government meet with AMLO's cabinet, a large caravan of nearly 10,000 migrants advances from south to north of Mexico towards the southern border of the United States. It is the final blow of a 2023 that has seen record immigration, which has risen exponentially throughout Joe Biden's presidency.

According to State Department sources cited by Fox, the officials will discuss "the unprecedented irregular migration in the Western Hemisphere and identify ways in which Mexico and the United States will address border security challenges, including actions to allow the reopening of key ports of entry across our shared border."

Illegal immigration became one of the biggest problems for the Biden administration. The issue has caused Joe Biden to fall in the polls ahead of the 2024 presidential elections and leaves him with a terrible approval rating regarding issues that voters consider crucial.

So far in December, border authorities have reported at least 250,000 encounters with illegal migrants on the southern border. If this continues, December would set a new record high for illegal entries across the border, surpassing September of this year.
