Every year, 1.4 million Hispanics are added to the list of U.S. residents who meet the requirements to vote. This figure was reported by the Pew Research Center, which noted that the Hispanic community is the second fastest growing ethnic or racial group in the electorate since the last presidential elections, only behind the Asian population.
The likely nominations of Donald Trump and Joe Biden in their respective party primaries makes the 2024 elections look like a repeat of 2020. However, the election will differ greatly for the Hispanic community. Four million more Hispanics are eligible to vote in this election, and the group as a whole is trending away from its traditional support for the Democratic Party, as can be read in this report from Voz Media.
According to Pew Research, an estimated 36.2 million Hispanic voters will be able to participate in this year's election, while in 2020, just 32.3 million were eligible to head to the polls. Pew projected that Latinos will represent 14.7% of citizens with the right to vote in November, the highest figure in history.
The center also revealed that California is the state with the most Latino voters. Its 8.5 million eligible Hispanic voters represent 25% of the nation's Hispanic electorate. The Golden State is followed by Texas (6.5 million), Florida (3.5 million), New York, (2.2 million) and Arizona (1.3 million).
