The well-known Zelda video game saga will soon hit the big screen. After the enormous cinematic success of "Super Mario," Nintendo decided to go a step further and adapt one of the most beloved video games around the world: "The Legend of Zelda." It was Nintendo Japan itself who, on X (formerly Twitter), announced this new bet that will be co-financed by Sony Pictures Entertainment:

As explained by one of the creators of the saga, Shigeru Miyamoto, the film adaptation will be produced by him in collaboration with Avi Arad, president of Arad Productions Inc. and producer of the box office hit "Spider-Man: Into the SpiderVerse," among others:

I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.

Wes Ball signs on as director of Zelda film adaptation

In addition, the company said in a press release, the film about the popular video game has already signed its director: Wes Ball. The filmmaker worked behind the cameras on "Maze Runner" as well as "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," the film that will hit the big screen in 2024.

Along with this, Nintendo announced that it will co-finance more than 50% of the production of the feature film with Sony Pictures Entertainment. The company reported in its statement that the move demonstrates its intention to "produce unique entertainment and make it reach as many people as possible":

By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles. By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible.
