'The Woman in Me': Britney Spears' memoirs tell the story of the numerous traumas she experienced in her life

The pop star narrated how her family controlled her life until 2021. In addition, she also detailed the abortion she received while dating Justin Timberlake.

Britney Spears recounted first-hand the different traumas she has experienced throughout her 41 years of life in her new memoirs titled "The Woman in Me." She discusses, among many other topics, how her family controlled her life until 2021.

The story begins with Spears remembering her childhood. Specifically, the pop princess tells about her childhood in Kentwood, La., per Vanity Fair. Her earliest memories are of her father who "turned bad when he got drunk" and how everyone in the town "dressed the children in matching clothes and knew how to handle a firearm."

At the age of 10, Britney began her rise to fame. Her first recognition came in the children's talent show "Star Search." A year later, she signed on as a host on Disney's "Mickey Mouse Club." Along with her, the program also featured faces like Keri Russell, Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake.

Timberlake and Spears got involved in a romantic relationship. During this romance, the singer reveals in her memoirs, she became pregnant. However, she says, Timberlake forced her to have an abortion: "If it had depended only on me, I would never have done it. And yet, Justin was so sure that he didn't want to be a father."

Months later, he broke up with her via text message. Further, he made it appear to the public that she had been the one who had been unfaithful: he painted her, as Spears explains, as "the bi*** who had broken the heart of America's darling."

Spears' rebellious phase

Spears claims that this was the moment that she began to feel "cursed." What she experienced months later didn't help either: her party phase, as she calls it. It was during these years, the artist reveals, that the controversial kiss with Madonna occurred. She assures the ideas was completely hers. It was the beginning of a low point for Spears that culminated in 2007.

There, El Mundo recalls, is when during a visit to a hair salon in Los Angeles, the singer shaved her head. She explains in her memoirs that she did it as a gesture of rebellion: "It was a way of saying 'Fu**'."

At that time, Britney already had two children and her family took advantage of her relationship with them to threaten her. If she did not receive psychological help, as she remains under the conservatorship of her father, Jamie Spears, she was unable to see her children. However, during her treatment, Spears continued her concerts. She said she did so because her family forced her to: "I came to this world to finance their bank account," according to Spears' story throughout the book.

In 2019, Spears was admitted to rehab again. There, the artist explains, she was medicated with lithium and antidepressants, reaching the point where she "was half dead." However, a nurse at the center took pity on her and helped her start the movement that gained momentum thanks to her fans: #FreeBritney. Thanks to her, the singer managed to report her father. In 2021, the singer regained her freedom and is now finally free from her father's conservatorship.
