Independence Day is the most important holiday in the United States. Every Fourth of July, American patriotism shines brighter than any of the other 364 days of the year.
Apart from the celebrations held in every corner of the nation, the Fourth of July has left us, throughout history, anecdotes worth remembering and surprising facts to tell:
1. Three presidents have died on Independence Day: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on July 4, 1826 and James Monroe on July 4, 1831. In addition, the 12th president, Zachary Taylor, fell ill on July 4, 1850, after eating bad fruit and died five days later.
2. Every Fourth of July, Americans eat about 150 million hot dogs. Speaking of this signature food, on Independence Day 2021, Joey Chestnut ate 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes, beating his own record set the previous year, during the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.
3. One of the most iconic parts of the Fourth of July is the fireworks show. This year, several cities such as Boulder, Colo., San Diego and Salt Lake City have decided to replace fireworks with illuminated drones.
4. The descendants of the 56 people who signed the Declaration of Independence ring the Liberty Bell 13 times as a tribute to the original 13 colonies.
5. On Independence Day 2022, Voz Media was born, with the objective of promoting and defending conservative values and to be the premiere news outlet for the Hispanic world in the United States.
