The InternalRevenue Service (IRS) recently released U.S. domestic migration data for 2021. They showed that citizens are leaving Democratic states behind to move to Republican lands. California, New York and Illinois were the hardest hit, as billions of dollars left their coffers.
The ranking of states that lost the most residents was led by California. Governed by Gavin Newsom since 2019, the Golden State was abandoned by 331,760 people in 2021, resulting in a loss of $29 billion. Second place went to New York, which lost 262,216 inhabitants in the same time period and 24 billion in the process.
The podium was rounded out by Illinois, another Democratic state governed by J.B. Pritzker. The total number of people leaving The Prairie State was 105,109, representing $10 billion. A little further back came Massachusetts and Lousiana, then governed by Charlie Baker (R) and John Bel Edwards (D).
As for the states that acquired the most inhabitants, the Republicans presumed to lead the ranking. Among the first five, four were governed by the GOP. First place went to Florida, which gained 255,834 citizens and $39 billion to its economy. Slightly behind was Texas, with 174,866 new neighbors and 10 billion in extra revenue.
Third on the list was North Carolina, the only Democratic state present, with an income of 76,720 people and an extra $4 billion. Fourth and fifth place went to South Carolina and Tennessee, with 64,724 and 62,015 new residents, respectively.

s in 2022, Kathy Hochul, governor of New York, had criticized her peer Ron DeSantis. "I just want to say to the 1.77 million Jews who call New York home: thank you for calling New York home. Don't go anywhere or to any other state. Florida is overrated," Hochul said at the time.
Interestingly, according to IRS data, most of the people arriving in Florida in 2021 came from New York. With the attraction of no state income taxes, the Sunshine State also welcomed many residents from New Jersey, California and Illinois.
On the other hand, Californians chose Texas as their main destination. 105,434 residents set their destination for the Lone Star State, followed by Arizona, Nevada and Washington.
