Iran: 'Morality Police' leave a teenager in a coma for wearing her veil incorrectly

Armita Garawand, 16, was at Shohada metro station when she was attacked for not complying with orders about the Islamic garment.

Norwegian NGO, Hengaw, has reported that the 'Morality Police' left Iranian teenager Armita Garawand in a coma. It all happened on Sunday when, the organization explained in a press release, the 16-year-old girl was at the Shohoda metro station in Tehran. There the police attacked the young woman for "what they perceived as non-compliance with the compulsory 'hijab'":

According to reports obtained by the Hengaw organization for Human Rights, on the morning of Sunday, October 1st, 2023, Armita Garawand, a 16-year-old originally from Kermanshah residing in Tehran, was physically attacked by authorities in the "Shohada" station at Tehran Metro for what they perceived as non-compliance with the compulsory “hijab.” As a result, she sustained severe injuries and was transported to the hospital.

The incident ended with Armita Garawand admitted to the Fajr Air Force hospital where, the NGO reports, she remains in a coma. However, the Iranian authorities are not allowing the young woman to receive visits, not even from her family, meanwhile, Hengaw denounces, the state authorities deny that this attack took place:

All state-affiliated media outlets have systematically denied the physical assault on this young girl, and government officials have claimed that no physical altercation has taken place. These claims are solely based on a short, cropped video from an exterior angle of the train.

The NGO obtains evidence of the current state of Armita Garawand

However, the humanitarian organization obtained an image in which the young woman is allegedly shown in the hospital. In this way, Hengaw managed to demonstrate the attack that Armita Garawand suffered and for which she is currently hospitalized:

The event occurred months after the mandatory nature of this Islamic garment was tightened. Especially after the protests against the Iranian Government that arose after the death of the young Mahsa Amini more than a year ago.
