Washington and Tehran will begin a new round of negotiations on Sunday, after five years since the last high-level meeting. The meeting will come shortly before Donald Trump visits the region, on the first international trip of his second term.

A US official, speaking from anonymity, was the first to reveal the meeting, detailing that the Administration's emissary will be Steve Witkoff, special envoy for the Middle East.

Later, Iranian Foreign Minister Abas Araqchi confirmed the meeting in a video released by the local press. "Our Omani friends suggested Sunday as a date and we agreed," he assured. "The negotiations are moving forward and, naturally, the more we move forward, the more consultations and revisions we need, and the more time delegations need to assess the issues raised."

Just last weekend, Iran canceled a meeting scheduled for that Saturday.
