Two officials from the attorney general’s office for the Mexican state of Oaxaca (south) were arrested on charges of participating in the disappearance and murder of five people last February, the agency reported on Tuesday.
The arrests come amid investigations into the finding of incinerated bones at a drug trafficking training center in Jalisco, where people were allegedly forcibly recruited, authorities said.
According to Oaxaca Attorney General Bernardo Rodriguez, the detainees are two officials assigned to his office in the Pacific coast resort of Huatulco. The individuals have been charged with "forced disappearance of persons," the official said.
Rodriguez added that his office is also investigating Huatulco police for their alleged involvement in the murder of the five people, a crime that was also allegedly committed by a criminal organization operating in the area.
The attorney general's office reported that the group had traveled from the state of Tlaxcala, allegedly to commit robberies, according to the testimony of a civilian also arrested in the case.
As reported by AFP, the five bodies were found in an abandoned car at the end of February on the border with the state of Puebla. One woman from the initial group of seven people captured was found alive.
The Huatulco case is in addition to the finding of skeletal remains on a farm in Teuchitlán on March 5, which according to the authorities served as a training center for the Jalisco Cartel - New Generation (CJNG), considered a terrorist organization by the United States.
The Mexican government confirmed on Monday the capture of Jose Gregorio 'N,' known as "El Lastra," who was identified as the man in charge of the recruitment center located in Teuchitlán, Jalisco, where dozens of people were allegedly tortured and murdered.
