On Thursday, health authorities in Mexico reported that there are 22 confirmed cases of measles in the country, especially in the state of Chihuahua, following the outbreak in the border state of Texas, where almost 200 cases and two deaths have been reported.

According to the most recent epidemiological report, as of March 9, 2025, 416 probable cases had been reported in Mexico, of which 22 have been confirmed as measles.

"There are two imported cases and 20 associated with importation," states the Health report, which detailed that 18 correspond to the state of Chihuahua, which shares a wide border with Texas. More than half of the 22 cases in Mexico are patients under nine years old and the rest of them extend up to 19 years of age.

In 2024, the Mexican health ministry recorded 3,444 probable cases of measles or rubella, with seven confirmed, all related to imported infections.

In Texas, a border state in the southern United States, 198 confirmed cases of measles were reported as of March 7, while New Mexico had 10.

Whooping cough cases in Mexico

Mexican authorities are also on the lookout for cases of whooping cough with 288 confirmed cases, mostly in the capital, Nuevo Leon (north) and Chihuahua. In 2024, Mexico recorded 463 cases of this disease and 188 in 2023.

The country attributes these outbreaks to incomplete vaccination schedules, and has launched a call to visit health centers in case a booster dose is required.

Mexico has not registered autochthonous cases of measles since 1996 and maintains a permanent vaccination campaign.

In Europe and the United States, anti-vaccine movements have arisen, which has led to outbreaks of some diseases.
