Farmers in Spain demonstrated in the country's capital against the green agenda of the European Union (EU). They do so as protests intensify in several neighboring countries against EU measures aimed at climate change and agriculture. About 500 tractors congregated in the city.

Demonstration leaders have expressed that regulations prevent them from remaining competitive with other agricultural markets.

The destination of the demonstration is the Ministry of Agriculture. However, the National Police indicated that they will not let the tractors pass in the direction of Atocha, where the Ministry of Agriculture is located. Followingthis, the protesters endeavored to advance on foot, only to be met with forceful suppression by the security forces.

"The Government respects the right to demonstrate in accordance with the laws and according to the authorization issued by the Madrid Government delegation," said the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, in statements reported by the media.

Farmers in several European countries and among the initiatives they have criticized is the transition to a "greener" agricultural operation, such as the project on cutting pesticides. Faced with these protests, the Commission assures that it formally opened a "strategic dialogue" with agricultural producers, rural communities and companies in the sector.
