This Wednesday, the White House confirmed the death of a second U.S. citizen in the civil war in Sudan. This is the second American passport holder to be killed in the conflict in the North African country.

John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, confirmed the second U.S. casualty in statements to the media. "We can confirm the death of a second American citizen yesterday and extend our deepest condolences to the family," he said.

The Oval Office did not disclose the identity of this U.S. citizen. It also declined to release the name of the first victim.

This death was reported around the same time that the opposing sides involved in the conflict in Sudan agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire, which was announced on Tuesday. The U.S. evacuated its diplomatic personnel, but not all other U.S. passport holders, according to Kirby.

After evacuating diplomatic personnel, Joe Biden said, "I am receiving regular reports from my team on their ongoing work to assist Americans in Sudan, to the extent possible. We are also working closely with our allies and partners in this effort."
