Number three in the ATP ranking, Carlos Alcaraz, announced that he will not play the Madrid Masters 1000, one of the most important tournaments on the circuit, due to the muscle discomfort he has been suffering in the adductor of his right leg since last weekend.
While playing the final of the Barcelona ATP 500, Alcaraz began to feel discomfort in his right leg. Some problems that have forced the tennis player to give up playing in front of his home crowd in the capital of Spain.
"We have taken the decision not to take risks for the future because if I played I was going to be bothered longer than necessary," Alcaraz said at a press conference held on Thursday.
The Spanish tennis player has decided not to play in order to try to reach peak physical condition for the Rome Masters 1000, the lead-up to Roland Garros. Regarding the second Grand Slam of the season—which will take place from May 25 to June 8—and the Italian tournament, Alcaraz did not rule out his participation.
"I think I'm going to be for sure at Roland Garros and I'm going to try my best to be in Rome," he added.
Alcaraz will have to wait to conquer his third Madrid Masters 1000 crown. In 2022, he won convincingly in the final against German Alexander Zverev (6-3, 6-1). The following year, the Spanish tennis player reedited his triumph by beating the also German Jan-Lennard Struff (6-4, 3-6 and 6-3).
Last year, Russian Andrey Rublev won the Madrid Masters 1000 after beating Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final in three sets (4-6, 7-5, 7-5).
