United States, United Cup tennis champion
The U.S. mixed team overcame the Polish team thanks to the victory of Gauff and Fritz, regaining the title it won in 2023.
Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz led the U.S. team on Sunday in Sydney to win the United Cup tennis title by beating Poland in the final.
Gauff, 20, ranked No. 3 in the WTA, gave the Americans the first point after beating Poland's Iga Swiatek (No. 2), 6-4, 6-4, in an hour and 51 minutes of intense play, according to AFP.
Failing to find the necessary consistency with their respective serves, leading to breaks, Gauff was somewhat more expeditious with her serve in the decisive moments, winning 74% of the points with her first serve.
Then it was the turn of Fritz (world No. 4), who was facing another cannonballer of the circuit, Poland's Hubert Hurkacz (No.16). The two players, unlike their partners, were very effective with their service (over 80% of points won both and 30 aces between them) and only gave the opponent a game each, which resulted in splitting the first two sets.
In the third set, neither player got the break and everything was decided in the tie break, where the American was slightly superior to close the match and the title by 6-4, 5-7 and 7-6 (7/4) in almost two hours and 20 minutes of play.
The United States thus regains the title it won in the first edition (2023) of this mixed tournament, which is played by national teams and serves as preparation for the Australian Open, which will begin on Jan. 12.
