Spanish teams experienced a fateful night after a day full of surprises in the revamped Champions League. Reigning champion Real Madrid lost 1-0 to Lille and Bayern Munich lost in England to Aston Villa (1-0).

Meanwhile, Liverpool and Benfica, after their respective wins against Bologna (2-0) and Atletico Madrid (4-0), maintained their winning streaks.

With two games played by the 36 teams in the competition's single group, seven have gone undefeated, including Aston Villa, Brest and Benfica, who are tied with Germany's Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as the Reds and Juventus.

According to AFP, there are eight teams at the bottom of the pack that have yet to score any goals including AC Milan and Leipzig.

There were fewer goals on Wednesday night compared to Tuesday when the matches against Dortmund-Celtic (7-1) and FC Barcelona-Young Boys (5-0) rained with goals.

Real Madrid was off their game. Endrick was put in as a starter and Kylian Mbappé replaced him but it wasn’t enough to take home the win. In fact, Carlo Ancelotti said that it was a rough day for the team.

"We were in everything wrong, we could have tied at the end but it would not have been deserved. Matches can be lost, but today we didn't give off a good feeling," said the coach.
