The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis denied reports suggesting he is preparing a presidential bid for 2028 and accused the newspaper The Washington Post of fabricating a story based on anonymous sources.

The controversy arose after The Washington Post published a report in which, citing three people familiar with his plans, it claimed that DeSantis was considering a new bid for the Republican Party's presidential nomination.

However, the governor denied the report and directly challenged the newspaper. According to Just the News, DeSantis stated that he had not contacted anyone to prepare a candidacy and described the article as an attempt to attract readers using anonymous sources.

What does the report say?

According to The Washington Post, the governor has reportedly been in contact with at least one national political adviser to explore a possible presidential campaign. The newspaper also noted that an independent political action committee linked to DeSantis had reportedly sent out donation requests.

However, the Republican denied having made those contacts. In statements also reported by Fox News Digital, DeSantis accused the outlet of fabricating the story and reiterated that he had not taken any steps to run for any office.

DeSantis's political future

The controversy comes as the governor nears the end of his second term in Florida, scheduled for January 2027. The state constitution bars him from running for a third consecutive term.

DeSantis had already run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, when he attempted to challenge Donald Trump for the party leadership. However, he withdrew from the primaries in January of that year and subsequently announced his support for the current president.

Although he had not previously ruled out running for the White House again, his response to the recent report makes it clear that he denies making preparations for a presidential bid in 2028.

For now, the governor has not announced any electoral plans following his departure from the Florida administration, while the debate within the Republican Party continues over who might run to succeed Trump in the next presidential election.
