One police officer was killed and three others were wounded during a shooting that occurred on the night of Thursday, November 5, in Lakewood, a city located on the outskirts of Denver, Colorado. The attacker also died following an exchange of gunfire with authorities.

According to information published by Breitbart News and confirmed by the Associated Press, officers responded around 6:30 p.m. local time to a report of a suspicious individual attempting to board a public transit bus near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard.

Lakewood Police Department spokesperson John Romero explained that the man may have been connected to a traffic accident that had occurred earlier, in which the driver fled the scene.

When the officers approached, the suspect opened fire on them, leading to an armed confrontation. Four police officers were shot and transported to nearby hospitals, where one died. The other three remained in stable condition, according to information released by authorities.

A civilian was also injured, although the circumstances of their injuries had not been specified. The identities of the attacker and the deceased officer had not been released either.

The governor of Colorado mourned the officer's death

Colorado's Democratic governor, Jared Polis, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased officer and offered his support to the injured officers.

Polis emphasized that law enforcement officers risk their lives every day to protect communities and thanked them for their work.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team took over the investigation into the shooting, according to ABC News.

Colorado, among the states with the strictest gun control laws

The shooting occurred in a state that has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States.

As reported by Breitbart News, Colorado ranks 11th on the list of states with the most restrictive gun laws compiled by the organization Everytown for Gun Safety.

Its provisions include restrictions on high-capacity magazines, requirements for concealed carry, safe storage regulations, and laws allowing for the temporary removal of firearms from individuals deemed high-risk.

At this time, authorities have not publicly determined how the suspect obtained the weapon used in the attack.

The Lakewood Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances of the confrontation.
