A man remains in critical condition following an explosion related to fireworks that forced the evacuation of about 20 homes in Los Angeles County, Calif., late Thursday night.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. local time on the 1000 block of Bunbury Drive, near City of Industry, according to NBC Los Angeles, citing the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD).

The victim suffered injuries to his hands and was rushed to a hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition. Authorities have not disclosed her identity or the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion.

Preventive evacuation due to presence of explosives

During the inspection of the scene, firefighters found other fireworks and possible explosive materials, prompting emergency crews to order the evacuation of approximately 20 nearby homes.

Sheriff's deputies and personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department established a security perimeter while fire and explosives specialists assessed the objects found.

The Red Cross set up an assistance center for displaced residents in the Workman Mill Road area, according to information published by Infobae.

Subsequently, investigators determined that there was no immediate danger to the community, so all evacuated residents were able to return to their homes, as confirmed by NBC Los Angeles.

Authorities investigating cause of explosion

So far, it has not been determined what caused the explosion or whether the fireworks were being handled or stored improperly.

No arrests related to the incident have been announced either.

The investigation is ongoing under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which has asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the Industry Sheriff Station.

The incident once again highlights the risks associated with handling and storing fireworks in residential areas, especially when additional devices are present that could pose a danger to neighbors.
