As many as 21 Americans have been awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. Among them four presidents, a vice president and a secretary of state, as well as figures such as Martin Luther King. The most recent recipient was Barack Obama in 2009.

The award, in accordance with Alfred Nobel’s will, seeks to recognize certain criteria:

First, the promotion of peace among nations. This refers to a candidate’s concrete efforts to resolve international conflicts, mediate disputes, or foster reconciliation between warring countries. This is the basis of Donald Trump’s candidacy.

Next, consideration is given to the reduction or elimination of armies and armaments, reflecting Nobel’s concern for a safer, more peaceful world. Initiatives that contribute to reducing military forces or regulating armaments receive special attention.

Finally, consideration is given to the promotion of international peace congresses or agreements, including participation in treaties, organizations or meetings that seek peaceful, lasting solutions to conflicts — an area in which the president has also been active.
