The Department of Defense is investigating the arrest of a member of the U.S. Navy who was in Venezuela. According to the information, the serviceman was in the country on a personal trip.

"The United States is aware of reports that a Navy sailor was detained by Venezuelan authorities on or about Aug. 30 while on personal travel to Venezuela," Reuters quoted a Defense Department official as saying.

Meanwhile, it was also learned that the arrest occurred on Aug. 30 and was in the custody of the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (SEBIN), according to CNN.

The arrest comes at a time of tension between the U.S. government and the Nicolás Maduro regime after the Venezuelan opposition made allegations of fraud in the election on July 28.

According to the electoral records presented by the Venezuelan opposition, led by María Corina Machado, their candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, won the election with more than 60% of the votes.

Relations were further strained after the dictatorship issued an arrest warrant for González Urrutia and the United States seized a plane used by members of the Venezuelan regime.
