South Tampa residents have been affected by a mysterious sound they say it can be heard from Port Tampa to Davis Islands. Therefore, they are raising money to hire an expert to help them figure out what it is.

Sara Healy, a resident, organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise the money. According to Healy, the community needs to raise $2,500 to cover the cost of the equipment and setup. Then, they will need another $3,000 to evaluate other potential sources of noise: clubs, party boats, industry, community events such as concerts, parades or rallies. Finally, will need an additional $2,000 to analyze the data.

"South Tampa residents have been plagued by a mysterious deep bass sound that can be heard from Port Tampa to Davis Islands. Everyone seems to have their favorite theory, whether it’s a party boat, a club, a rager on Beer Can Island, a top-secret project on MacDill Air Force Base, or even aliens. In late 2022, Dr. James Locascio offered a glimmer of hope for an explanation – black drum fish. The black drum fish produces a sound by striking its sonic muscle against its swim bladder, and with enough fish in a large enough area, Locascio, who did his dissertation on the same topic, believes it could explain the noise," according to the GoFundMe description.

"While underwater sounds rarely transfer into the air due to their different densities, Locascio said black drum noises travel through the ground and tunnels, sometimes reaching people’s homes," the New York Times reported.

Some residents want an answer just so they can stop wondering. Others want to find a solution to halt the noise, but if fish are the culprits, people might have to wait until their mating season ends.
