Republicans nominate Tom Emmer to be the new speaker
The full House will now hold an election to see if Emmer earns the 217 votes necessary to win the gavel.
Tom Emmer has been nominated by Republicans to be speaker of the House. He is the third person to win be nominated since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted in early October.
The vote, according to Axios, was 117 votes for Emmer compared to 97 for Mike Johnson. Now, Emmer's candidacy will be put to a vote in the full House. The original group of candidates was at least nine, though several dropped out of the race, including Florida Representative Byron Donalds and Kevin Hern of Oklahoma.
"Like his predecessors, Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Steve Scalise (R-La.), Emmer may struggle to cobble together the 217 votes needed to win the speaker's gavel on the House floor," Axios detailed.
Emmer is a former college hockey player, attorney and local legislator. He was elected to the Minnesota state legislature in 2004.
