Biden 2024: President makes his re-election bid official
He posted a video on his Twitter account announcing that he will be running for the 2024 Democratic Party nomination.
President Joe Biden made official his candidacy for presidential reelection in 2024. Through a video posted on his Twitter account, Biden asked voters to give him more time to finish the job he started when he was sworn in and to put aside their concerns about prolonging his presidential run:
If he were to reedit his nomination and again achieve the presidency, Biden would be 86 years old at the end of a second term. In his campaign video, the Democratic primary candidate stressed that "the question we face is whether in the coming years we will have more or less freedom, more or less rights." He further referenced one of his potential opponents in the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump: "MAGA extremists are lining up to fracture the freedoms of Americans."
The announcement comes at a complicated time for the president. Seven in ten voters (70%) do not want Biden to serve a second term. In addition, 51% of Democrats reject his continuation of four more years at the helm of the U.S. presidency. His main obstacle, age.
The president did not choose just any day to present his candidacy. On April 25, 2019, he announced that he would run for the US presidency, winning in the 2020 presidential election over Donald Trump.
Donald Trump: "Biden is the most corrupt president in U.S. history."
Former President and 2024 GOP primary candidate Donald Trump issued a statement noting "the damage Joe Biden has done to America."
One of the great handicaps of the Biden Administration has been its work on the southern border. Trump blamed the president for "releasing millions of illegal immigrants" into the United States:
Trump concluded his statement by asserting that "Biden is the most corrupt president in the history of the United States."
Reactions from the Democratic Party
Marianne Williamson, one of his opponents in the Democratic primary, retweeted a post calling for Biden's participation in a debate if he wants to be re-elected:
For the moment, the other Democratic candidate who announced his candidacy, Robert F. Kennedy, did not make a statement. The Vice President, Kamala Harris, confirmed that she will run again hand in hand with Joe Biden:
