Congressman Donald McEachin, a Democrat from the state of Virginia, died Monday just under a month after being re-elected to the House of Representatives.

The congressman's press office stated that McEachin had been suffering from colorectal cancer since 2013:

McEachin, 61, was first elected in 2016 to represent the 4th Congressional District in the House of Representatives. He had previously served as a representative in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly.

In the last midterms, the congressman was re-elected to his seat. Now, new elections must be called in his district to elect a new representative. In any case, there will be no substantial changes in the Lower House, where the Republican Party already has the majority.

His staff explained that until a new representative is elected, the congressman's office will remain open. Donald McEachin was the third African American in history to represent Virginia in the House of Representatives.
