Microsoft to cut nearly 4% of its global workforce

The decision is Microsoft's biggest cut since it laid off 10,000 employees in 2023 and comes amid job cuts at other tech companies.

Microsoft reported that it will cut just under 4% of its global workforce, a move that will mainly affect mid-level positions. It argued that the decision is part of an economic strategy at the company.

"We continue to implement the organizational changes necessary to better position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace," a Microsoft spokesman said in an e-mail sent to AFP.

The tech giant did not report the number of workers who will be affected by this cut. As of June 2024, the company had 228,000 employees. According to specialized media, it could be about 9,000 workers.

The decision is Microsoft's biggest cut since it laid off 10,000 employees in 2023 and comes amid job cuts at other technology companies.

Artificial intelligence trend

The employee downsizing coincides with a trend in the tech sector, where companies such as Microsoft are embracing artificial intelligence to boost the productivity of their teams.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said -recalled CNN- earlier this year that 20% to 30% of the company's code is already generated by AI systems, and noted that the company is committing billions of dollars to developing infrastructure related to this technology.
