Driver responsible for accident with Biden's motorcade accused of being under the influence of alcohol

After conducting an investigation, Wilmington police determined it was an accidental collision.

Wilmington police authorities announced that the driver who crashed into President Joe Biden's Secret Service van on Sunday is being charged with driving under the influence.

This Monday, the communications director of the Wilmington Police Department, David Karas, informed CNN that an investigation determined that the suspect who crashed into the president's motorcade was under the influence of alcohol.

“Wilmington Police have determined that this was an accidental collision, and have charged the driver of the striking vehicle – a 46-year-old Wilmington man – with Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol and Inattentive Driving,” Karas said.

Although the statement did not mention the name of the suspect, the man was identified as James Cooper.

The crash

The unusual incident occurred Sunday night, when a drunk driver crashed into a parked pickup truck that was part of President Biden's motorcade near his campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, law enforcement officials said Monday morning.

The president was heading from his campaign office to the car but stopped to answer questions from the press when he was interrupted by the accident that hit a Secret Service personnel van.

After the accident, the president was taken to the vehicle where his wife, Jill Biden, was already waiting. Neither Biden nor the first lady were injured.
