'Despacito': Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s hit song is still unbeatable online

Seven years after its release, the music video has more views on YouTube than any other Spanish video.

Not even Bizarrap with his songs known as Bzrp Music Sessions. Shakira with hits like Te Felicito or Bad Bunny and Karol G have done what Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee did. The years go by and no one has managed to beat Despacito as the most viewed video clip of a Spanish song on YouTube. It has been the number one video for several years now.

On January 13, 2017, the Puerto Rican artist Luis Fonsi together with Daddy Yankee released this song. Expectations were high, especially considering the influence and number of followers that both artists had and continue to have. It wasn’t clear that Despacito would be a hit, especially because Fonsi had never delved into a more rhythmic and less melancholic genre like the one we were used to (click here to see the video clip).

Number one in the U.S., Spain, Latin America and Bulgaria

"I still don't quite understand why what happened with Despacito happened," Luis Fonsi said in an interview with Agencia EFE, proving that even he couldn’t believe it. It was a global phenomenon, "Pasito a pasito," Despacito managed to win over not only the Hispanic crowd but also people from countries where a small part of the population speaks or understands Spanish.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee managed to make the song number one on the charts of countries such as Austria, Germany, Bulgaria and Hungary, among others. It also topped the charts in the United States, driven by the hundreds of millions of Hispanic residents, as well as in Spain and all the Latin American countries.

That success is still evident. Seven years later, it is still the most viewed video clip for a song in Spanish in the history of YouTube, with more than 8 billion views, reaching 1 billion views in just 97 days. And that number keeps going up.
