'Corrupt, rich and oligarchs': AMLO criticizes massive protest against him in Mexico

The March for Our Democracy, as dubbed by its organizers, was attended by at least 700,000 people.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized the protest that was held against him and in defense of democracy in Mexico. The president maintained that demonstration was promoted by "the corrupt, rich and oligarchs."

"That is why the protests are happening, like yesterday's demonstration ... Those who were in the government before or benefited from corruption are dissatisfied and want to return. I also want them to return, but what they stole," said López Obrador during his morning appearance before the media.

In another meeting with journalists, he again attacked the organizers of the demonstration and maintained that, in his opinion, institutions will continue to be respected in Mexico.

The March for Our Democracy, as dubbed by its organizers, was attended by at least 700,000 people, exceeding the number that AMLO said would trigger him to consider resignation. However, AMLO estimated the number of attendees at 90,000 people, 30,000 more than he had said initially, according to El Universal.

In 2020, the Mexican president said that if more than 100,000 people demonstrated against him, he would consider leaving command of the country.

"In my case, at the first demonstration of 100,000 and I see that I no longer have support in the polls, to Palenque, Chiapas, I won't even wait for the revocation of my term ... because I have principles, because I have ideals," López Obrador assured at that time.
