A promising national cyclist dies after being hit by a car while training for the World Championships

Magnus White, 17, was struck from behind by a vehicle while training near his home in Colorado.

Magnus White, one of the most promising national cycling stars, was hit by a car while training for the World Cycling Championships, to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in August. The young cyclist was training near his home in Colorado when he was struck from behind by a car, killing him.

The U.S. Cycling Federation announced White's death in a statement it posted to social media:

It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share the news that 17-year-old Magnus White has passed away in a training accident. On Sunday, July 30th, we received the news that National Team athlete Magnus White was struck by a car on a bike ride in his home of Boulder, Colorado. White was focused on his final preparations before leaving for Glasgow, Scotland to compete in the Junior Men’s Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships on August 10, 2023.

An impressive resume

Despite being so young, White had an impressive resume. He was crowned champion at the 17-18 Junior National Cyclocross Championships in 2021 where he was selected to be part of the national team for a full season of European cyclocross racing. In 2022 he competed for the U.S. team in the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He also competed on the U.S. team at the World Cyclocross Championships in January 2023 in Hoogerheide. He earned a spot on the Mountain Bike World Championships team for Summer 2023.
