World population hits 8 billion on Jan. 1, 2024

The Census Bureau estimated that the population in the United States was 335,893,238 as the clock struck midnight.

The Census Bureau projected that on Jan. 1, 2024, the world population would surpass 8 billion people. This represents an increase of 75,162,541 (0.95%) from New Year's Day 2023. In January 2024, 4.3 births and 2.0 deaths are expected worldwide every second.

Meanwhile, the Census Bureau also estimated that in January 2024, the United States will experience one birth every 9 seconds and one death every 9.5 seconds.

"Net international migration is expected to add one person to the U.S. population every 28.3 seconds. The combination of births, deaths and net international migration increases the U.S. population by one person every 24.2 seconds," the report said.

Last year's global growth rate was slightly less than 1%. The Census Bureau Population Clock shows simulated real-time growth of the populations of the United States and the world. At the end of each year, a revised set of population estimates from the census date is used to update short-term projections of the demographic clock.

"Once the updated series of monthly projections is completed, the daily population clock values are derived by interpolation. Within each calendar month, the daily numerical population change is assumed to be constant, subject to negligible differences caused by rounding," the Census Bureau detailed.
