'The New York Times' considers John Fetterman one of the "most stylish" people of 2022

The news caused a furor on social networks. From the disbelief of his wife: "No, not John Fetterman!!!!!!!!!", to reactions from politicians and consultants: "What is 'The New York Times' smoking?."

The New York Times named John Fetterman as one of the 93 "most stylish" people of 2022. The list of the year's "most stylish" people includes politicians, celebrities, athletes, influencers, and television and movie actors:

Some of them have appeared this year in the Styles section. Others simply caught our attention. Love them or hate them, they all have at least one thing in common. Sometime in the last 12 months, they got us talking about how we dress, how we live and how we choose to express ourselves. We welcome dissent. But we are undoubtedly right.

The Times praised Fetterman's attire - whose usual attire includes a hoodie, basketball shorts and sneakers - and argued that "the senator-elect from Pennsylvania will wear Carhartt to Capitol Hill."

Fetterman's "style" reactions

The newspaper's decision to name the Democrat on the list caused a furor on social media, including a reaction from his wife, Gisele Fetterman, who expressed on Twitter disbelief at the praise: "No, not John Fetterman! Recount!!!."

The Daily Wire noted that "because of his untraditional appearance. Fetterman is known for playing up his 'everyman' persona, even in formal situations." This may have caused him to be considered for the list.

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) quipped in a tweet, "Total progressive bias, The New York Times! Not only do I have the best hair in Congress, but I brought Carhartt to Capitol Hill four years ago."

"How does The New York Times justify putting John Fetterman on the same list as the late Queen Elizabeth? Pennsylvania's senator-elect will bring Carhartt to Capitol Hill," wrote Sheriden Nolen, a staffer for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

Political consultant Nachama Soloveichik said, "What is The New York Times smoking?"

More politicians on the list

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is also on the list, and the newspaper cites her "personal adornments" as featured accessories: "The new Supreme Court justice has worn the necklaces to the Marble Palace," The Times says.

New York Democratic Mayor Eric Adams is also among the 93 picks: "Call it 'swagger' (and he has it), call it style: Either way, there's no denying that the party's mayor has it, along with a closet full of impeccably tailored suits," wrote The Times.

Although Vice President Kamala Harris did not make the list, her stepdaughter Ella Emhoff did, of whom the newspaper noted her "cartoonish personal style."

Not even the orbit of the buttoned-up White House, where Ms. Emhoff's stepmother serves as vice president, could lure the knitwear designer and IMG model away from her cartoonish personal style.

Fetterman, Jackson, Adams and Emhoff were joined on the list by Hollywood and entertainment personalities such as Rihanna, Ben Affleck, Anne Hathaway and Brad Pitt.
