Several US cities increase security for Jewish communities after Hamas attack on Israel

Although no credible threat has emerged, authorities preferred to increase surveillance at Jewish establishments.

Several cities were concerned about Jewish communities and their religious sites after the Hamas attack on Israel. Authorities explained that although no credible threats have emerged, it is prudent to increase security as a preventative measure.

New York was one of the first locations to strengthen surveillance around temples and increase security for Jewish residents. Kathy Hochul, the state's governor, explained that her office is maintaining close communication with the Department of State and the United States Department of Homeland Security to evaluate any threats in order to maintain the safety of New Yorkers.

“While there is no credible threat to New York City at this time, our administration is in touch with Jewish leaders across the five boroughs, and we have directed the NYPD to deploy additional resources to Jewish communities and houses of worship citywide to ensure that our communities have the resources they need to make sure everyone feels safe,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

In California, police also expanded patrols and security around Jewish establishments in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles.

"The Beverly Hills Police Department has increased security and patrols around Jewish institutions in the City and continues to work closely with law enforcement partners in the region to ensure public safety," a statement from the Beverly Hills Police Department.

“The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of the turmoil in the Middle East and lives lost. In those areas where we serve both our Jewish and Muslim communities, we will be conducting extra patrol to ensure the safety of all,” department head Michael Moore said.

Miami Beach also explained through social media X that after what happened in Israel, the authorities decided to increase surveillance in strategic points of the city and near all the synagogues.

“In light of recent events in Israel, the Miami Beach Police Department has augmented police visibility near all synagogues and other strategic locations in our city. This is a proactive measure to ensure the safety and security of everyone,” the police department announced.

Other cities that joined the preventive initiative in sensitive areas for both the Jewish and Islamic faiths were: New Jersey, Washington, DC and Houston.
