Jorge Drexler triumphs at the Latin Grammy Awards

Singer Rosalía was censored by television while performing 'Hentai', one of the tracks from 'Motomami' which won Best Album of the Year.

On Thursday Las Vegas dressed up to host the Latin Grammy Awards. The event, held at the Michelob Ultra Arena, featured Jorge Drexler, Bad Bunny and Rosalía, who won, respectively, seven, five and four gramophones.

The gala, presented by Luis Fonsi, Laura Pausini, Thalía and Anitta, featured a performance by the Catalan singer Rosalía, the winner of Best album of the year for Motomami. She got a little upset when her song, Hentai, which she performed on the piano, did not pass the television censorship and was silenced live with a beep, which she later acknowledged to the media in the press conference following the gala:

Madonna has done songs with sexual content before me, Björk has done songs with sexual content before me, Lil'Kim has done it before me.... And that's why I thought it didn't have to be controversial. But look, if a song with lyrics like that still creates conversation, if a woman talking about it becomes something that people comment on, to me that proves that more songs like that need to continue to be made.

95 year old woman awarded Best New Artist

Angela Álvarez was another of the night's big winners. At the age of 95, the elderly woman became the Best New Artist along with Mexican Silvana Estada. Her story is worthy of a movie. She has no musical knowledge beyond singing in the church choir, but recording with her grandson Carlos José has made her a recognized name. She recently told her story to CNN and what it means to her to perform her songs:

I felt very, very proud to be able to tell my story, to touch people who have gone through probably the same, or more than I have. Some people give up, but I didn't give up. I always fought.

As she herself recounted, it was her grandson, Carlos José, who informed her of her nomination for a Latin Grammy, a recognition that the Cuban singer still finds hard to believe:

He said to me: Nana, sit down, sit down. You are nominated for a Grammy. I said: wait, are you serious or are you joking? Because I can't believe that! Well, believe it because you are nominated for a Latin Grammy. Wow! But how did that happen? But how did I get there? I didn't do anything! You don't, but your music does.

Fame, however, does not bother her. In the Michelob Ultra Arena, she moved like a fish in water and previously assured El Mundo that she was taking it easy thanks to "a secret that helps her cope with everything", her faith:

I am calm. But I am a bit overwhelmed by the schedules. This is like a crazy week and I'm asked to be here, then there and get up early to make a big list of things.... But I do everything the same. My secret is trust. All my problems and all my anxieties I give to God. I put everything in your hands and the decision is yours. I tell him 'you are going to do with me whatever suits me, because you know what suits me and what doesn't' and, honestly, I believe that God put me here. It was not so far-fetched to think of reaching this place, because I have always liked music and I have dedicated myself to singing in church, in addition to singing many songs to God. So yes... I think God wanted to put me in the Latin Grammy Awards.
