The Baja California State Attorney General's Office raided a warehouse in Tijuana that had been rented by Thomas Markle, father of Meghan Markle, as part of an investigation into the alleged storage of child sexual abuse material. According to AFP, the raid took place last Saturday following an anonymous tip.

What the authorities found

Agents secured unit number 22 at the Baja Storage complex, located on the Tijuana-Ensenada highway. According to the District Attorney's Office, inside they found Asian magazines dating back about 20 years, VHS tapes, and computer equipment, which will be turned over to the Federal Prosecutor's Office for analysis.

The business owner reported that Markle stopped paying rent in 2024, although his belongings remained in storage. Authorities have not confirmed whether the seized material constitutes illegal evidence, as the items must undergo the appropriate legal and forensic procedures.

A cross-border investigation

The search in Mexico comes on top of an ongoing investigation in the Philippines, where judicial authorities are examining allegations regarding images and videos of child abuse allegedly found in a former residence of Markle's in the province of Cebu. The Philippine prosecutor's office confirmed that its unit combating online trafficking and sexual exploitation of minors is analyzing the case.

The investigation began based on statements from Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan's half-brother, who claimed to have found the material and reported it to the police. Philippine authorities seized a computer to conduct a digital forensic examination and determine the scope of the allegations.

Forensic analysis of the seized electronic equipment, tapes, and publications will be key to determining whether any illegal material exists and who may have stored it. Meanwhile, Mexican and Philippine authorities are conducting separate investigations, and the case remains in a preliminary stage

Reactions from Markle and Meghan

Thomas Markle, 82, who is currently in the United States, denied the allegations in an interview with the Daily Mail, calling them "lies." So far, the Mexican Attorney General's Office has not reported an arrest warrant nor has it formally determined the former cinematographer's liability.

Meghan Markle said she was "deeply distressed" by the revelations and expressed her solidarity with any child who may have been harmed. The duchess noted that she became aware of troubling allegations against her father in 2018 through a letter sent to British police, and that her estrangement from her family was motivated by a desire to protect her children.
