US approves air defense sale to Ukraine worth nearly $2.7 billion

Washington approved a potential sale of air defense systems and equipment to Ukraine worth $2.68 billion, as Kiev calls for more support to counter Russian attacks, AFP reported.
The State Department notified Congress of its decision to authorize a potential Foreign Military Sale to the Ukrainian government to strengthen its air defense capabilities.
According to official information cited by AFP, Ukraine requested to acquire various types of missiles, launchers, anti-drone radars and trailers, among other equipment.
The deal is still subject to congressional review.
Washington indicated that, if the purchase goes through, it would be financed through a combination of European contributions and funds from the U.S. Foreign Military Financing Program allocated during the previous administration.
Shouldering a larger share of the cost of supporting Ukraine
The announcement also coincides with a new escalation of Russian attacks on Kiev and with Ukrainian forces' difficulties in maintaining sufficient ammunition for their air defense systems.
